Welcome

“Pamoja” (Together)

The mixture of wildlife and meditation combines perfectly in a yoga safari. Think of it as a spiritual safari retreat.

YOGA & SAFARI HEALING RETREAT IN TANZANIA  January 6, to 18, 2024

January is the best month to visit Tanzania ~ the beginning of Tanzanian’s short dry season, but with chances of rain in the afternoon. It’s the start of the Great Migration calving season, which is followed closely by high predator action. Landscape is fresh and green, with thousands of migratory birds.

Renew your spirit in Tanzania's great plains. Experience a week of energetic yoga, meditation, Safari, and cultural immersion.

If you are looking to reset, renew, and restore in one of the most beautiful and healing places on Earth, join us for this incredible adventure. You will experience travel in a completely different way. You will do so from a fully embodied perspective as our reflective practices will clear the lens through which we see the world and ourselves. These wellness adventures embed the wisdom of the Maasai elders, whose lineage includes some of the region's most important healing traditions. The Maasai have a deep and cultural knowledge of natural medicines and remedies and show participants how herbs are prepared and administered.

Experience 13 days of inspirational yoga, meditation, Safari, and cultural immersion. This travel and retreat experience will leave you feeling grounded in your body, free in your mind, and light in your soul. Commit to practicing daily yoga sessions, meditation, and group healing sessions amongst the most beautiful landscape East Africa offers. Learn from the Maasai and their herbal healing traditions, and join a five day safari to the stunning National Parks in Northern Tanzania (Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater). Enjoy meals created from fresh, local, and (when possible) organic foods cultivated from the fertile land of the Kilimanjaro region. We will close out our retreat by taking our personal work "off the mat" to engage mindfully with the community in which we are staying.

We will honor this land where humanity began through ceremony, song, and dance. We will honor our teachers, our ancestors, and all of those who have come before us. We will travel mindfully and tread lightly on this beautiful soil, seeking to learn with all aspects of ourselves.

A portion of the proceeds from this trip benefits FAME a non-profit organization.

(Abeid Amani Karume International Airport, ZNZ)

TODAY WE SAY GOODBYE

In the morning, you'll enjoy your final yoga and meditation session by the beach. Take a last dip in the blue-green waters and soak up the sun one final time before you head to the airport to return to the real world! In the afternoon, you will be transported to the airport where, unfortunately, you'll be headed home.

International Flight to Kilimanjaro International Airport and flight leaving from Zanzibar Airport on the last day (Must fly out on January 5th to arrive in Tanzania on January 6th for the start of the retreat.  Please note the airport you fly is different than the airport you fly home from.)

The word Zanzibar is said to have both Persian and Arabic origins – from the Persian “Zangh Bar” loosely translating as “land of the black people”, or from Arabic “Zayn Z’al Barr” which means ‘Fair is this land”.

Zanzibar is called ‘The Spice Island’ due to the number of different spices grown there and it’s also famous as the birthplace of Queen frontman, Freddie Mercury.

In my mind, there’s nowhere on earth quite like Zanzibar. Often described as a ‘cultural melting pot’, owing to the various different peoples who’ve settled here over the ages. All of whom have left their mark in one way on this island, whether it be in the architecture, the customs, the food, the beliefs, religion or on the people themselves. The Swahili name of Unguja means “bowl of fruits” – quite fitting really!

Zanzibar was a major trading hub, as well as the starting point for many journeys into the then ‘unexplored’ African interior, including those of David Livingstone and Henry Morton Stanley.

This also meant that it was at the forefront of the slave trade during its peak in the 19th century when men, women, and children were forced into slavery on the mainland, brutalized, chained, and auctioned at the slave market then shipped off to other parts of the world.

That’s if they survived the journeys. Many didn’t.

Nowadays, Zanzibar is a land of contrasts. It’s a place where the modern world meets the old world as traditional dhows (sailing boats) line the harbor alongside yachts and catamarans. A place of beauty and decay. With dark winding alleys and beautiful open beaches. A place to pray and place to party.

Zanzibar might not be everyone’s cup of chai, but it is the place that fascinates me more than any other.

The mix of cultures and flavors, coupled with the proximity to the Indian Ocean means that Swahili cuisine is possibly the best food in all of Africa. Expect fresh fish and food cooked with traditional spices and plenty of coconuts.

If you ever want to feel like an Arabian princess, then Zanzibar is the place.

Zanzibar was a major trading hub and a central point in the East African slave trade.

The Trans-Atlantic slave trade is well documented in both movies and history, but less seems to be known about the slave trade on the other side of the continent. The East African slave trade was brutal, with hundreds of thousands of people being trafficked through Bagamoyo and Dar es Salaam on the mainland, to be sold in Zanzibar, then shipped to the rest of the world.

There are lots of places to grab a cup of coffee or tea in Zanzibar, but a few of our favorites include Zanzibar Coffee house, The Zanzibar Cafe, Lazuli, and Cafe Africa Shops. And if you’d like a true Zanzibari experience, we will head to Jaws Corner for a coffee or Babu Chai for tea. Babu means ‘grandfather’ and ‘chai’ is tea. Babu Chai is a stall, rather than a shop or coffee, and he sets up each evening at around 6pm. As well as sweet spiced tea and ginger tea, you can also buy coffee (kahawa), donuts (mandazis), chapatis with egg (chapati mayai).

Top 4 Reasons Not To Miss This Trip!

Awe-inspiring wildlife reconnects you to the Universe.

The word safari is a Swahili word that means 'a journey.' What makes a Healing Safari above and beyond a traditional African safari is that as you embark on an external journey through the wilds of Tanzania, you are gently guided on an internal exploration of your own heart and soul.

Being immersed inside of the massive wildebeest and zebra migration, where you literally feel the Earth vibrate gently, nudges you out of any feelings of 'stuckness', and your soul soars freely.

Nurture a Yoga & Meditation Practice

Have you been telling yourself for a while that you want to be more consistent with meditating and practicing yoga? Are you seeking a way to include meditation and yoga in your life that fits your schedule and ability?

Great news! The daily meditation and yoga we practice in absolutely gorgeous settings on this retreat is for all levels of experience. You will be introduced to Maasai Yoga & Meditation that takes its cues from the land and wildlife inhabited by the Maasai so you learn how to "talk to your own nature". By the end of the Healing Safari, you will have established a regular meditation and yoga practice at a pace and level that is customized specifically for you.

Eco-luxury accommodations giving you experiences of three profoundly different landscapes

You begin the Healing Safari at a lodge close to Mt. Meru where you can feel the comforting energy of this land, home to the indigenous Maasai people. You then travel to the Serengeti, on the plains of the wide-open savannah. You finish the Healing Safari in a highland forest, a cooler, moister environment. As you move through each climate, you can enjoy how your body-mind adjusts to each setting and you tap into new sources of energy you may not know you had!

Spending your days 'in the bush', in luxury accommodation, resting in the womb of Mother Nature; waking to the sounds of an abundance of birds, elephants walking behind your tent, and the roar of lions in the distance, you find yourself getting in synch with the enlivening rhythms of nature.

Experience the power of African ancient wisdom traditions

Additional Travel

Thirteen days in East Africa is a splendid amount of time to spend. However, if you would like to extend your journey to include a few days of personalized healing with an herbalist, more countries, or a few more stops, we can help you plan and offer advice. Please let us know if you would like to add more days onto your trip for an extended stay in Zanzibar, a climb up Mt. Kilimanjaro , a visit to other local towns or tribes in Moshi or Arusha, trekking to see the Mountain Gorillas (in Rwanda and or Uganda) or other part of Africa. Just let us know, and we will help to make it happen.

The tourism industry in Tanzania is a huge contributor to the overall economy, and to the prosperity of local economies scattered throughout the country. However, tourism also leaves a large footprint on the environment. As a tour operator, it’s our responsibility to offer safaris and experiences that are responsible and respect local cultures and communities. It is important to conserve their living cultural heritage and authentic values, and to contribute to an inter-cultural understanding. At the same time, we need to protect natural assets and wildlife to support a viable natural environment and conserve its heritage and biodiversity.

The United Republic of Tanzania consists of Tanganyika, on the African mainland, and the islands of Zanzibar and Pemba. It is the largest country in East Africa and became independent from its British mandate in 1961 under the leadership of its first President, Julius Nyerere, who managed to unite the over 120 separate tribes into a cohesive society, turning Tanzania into the stable factor in Africa it still is today. This stability, combined with the friendly population and the country’s wealth of natural and cultural diversity, ensures that Tanzania is the ultimate holiday destination, an exotic location that will make your dreams come true and where you can rely on Urth Expedition to guide you.

The tribes and cultures of Tanzania are every bit as fascinating as the wildlife and breathtaking landscapes that the country is popularly known for. What’s even more interesting is that Tanzania is home to more than 120 tribes, all with their distinct traditions and customs. Naturally, the best way to learn about these new cultures and gain a deeper appreciation for diversity is to include a visit to these tribes in your itinerary.
